We deliver work on land and on water.
Our land-based activities are delivered at centre’s in The Lakes or more locally, as in our night events or single day activity challenges.
Our water-based work is delivered on the canal systems of England and Wales and also during off shore sailing opportunities that have taken place in the past, from Hull, Southampton, Scotland, Bridlington and Amsterdam.
The majority of our work on water is linked to national and international accredited standards; this is either via the Open College Network and the National Community Boating Association (we are a registered training centre) or the Royal Yachting Association.

The boys doing a spot of sailing
All of our sailing work is linked directly to the RYA accredited qualifications scheme. We have been lucky enough to work with young people and train them up to the level of Competent Crew and also Day Skipper (land and water based qualifications). We are lucky, that we have access via one of our volunteers, to a very experienced and well qualified Yacht Master Instructor. Our work on large off shore yachts generally takes place during weekends or weeks, with each experience building on the ‘sea time’ of those taking part.
We charter fully coded yachts and have sailed yachts up to 56ft in length in some of the most beautiful areas of the world. These activities are expensive, but are worth (in our view) every penny when it comes to the learning experience offered.
In addition, and funded by The National Lottery, we have access to an Enterprise sailing dinghy. This is kept at Yeadon sailing club and the boat ‘Achieving Together 2’ is used regularly to introduce young people to their first sailing experience.
We use the canal systems of England and Wales to work with groups of young people. We find that the environment of the canal lends to long periods of time where the young people we work with are able to slow down and to reflect on their lives and talk, sometimes for the first time, about their fears and concerns. Whilst with us, the young people clean, cook, look after the boat in general and really experience life (as in our yachting work) as a team. A group who depend on each other to function and to live. Our boat Achieving Together is fully equipped and can be used at all times of the year.
Our barge Serious Fun
Our land based work covers all of the activities that people can take part in, in the great outdoors:
- mountain biking
- ropes courses
The list goes on…
All of what we do is linked to the learning process. One of our main activities is the SERIOUS FUN Night Challenge. During this event, we work with up to 6 groups of 9 young people between 6pm and 2am. During the night, we challenge the groups to compete against each other in many activities: initiative challenges, ropes courses, rope swings etc. the groups are scored for enthusiasm, team work, effort and behaviour. A trophy is awarded to the winning team and this is presented at either their youth centre or their school. The night event is one of our most popular events.
